A question we are regularly asked is "What is the difference between VRV and VRF? Well, in short, they are the same thing! VRV and VRF refer to the same HVAC technology, standing for "variable refrigerant volume" and "variable refrigerant flow," respectively. The primary distinction between them is their name, not the technology itself and the manufacturer of the system.
History
Daikin Industries, Ltd. originally launched and trademarked the VRV air conditioning system in 1982, introducing the world's first use of variable refrigerant volume control. Other companies developed similar systems and adopted the term VRF to describe theirs. Since then, VRF has become the favoured term for this type of HVAC system.Â
So What is a VRV or VRF HVAC System?
Also referred to as a VRF system, variable refrigerant flow is a technology that circulates only the minimum amount of refrigerant needed during a single heating or cooling period. This mechanism introduced the opportunity for end users to individually control several air conditioning zones at one time. VRV and VRF systems connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit to regulate building temperature. They can automatically adjust refrigerant flow to maintain a comfortable temperature in each room.Â

What Are the Benefits of a VRV/VRF HVAC System?
VRV and VRF systems provide a more comfortable and efficient climate control solution.Â
They can lower energy costs and carbon footprint by automatically turning off when a room is unoccupied.
